ocr: CMB The Universe, in its early days, was nothing more than an extremely hot ball of expanding plasma. Shortly after the Big Bang, the plasma became transparent to radlation that is still around today, highly redshifted into the microwave region of the spectrum. Astronomers have named this the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Experiments such as COBE, the COsmic Background Explorer, have mapped the CMB as seen below.
